"Part ranges are extremely narrow with the clarinets confined to the lower register, and dynamic contrasts are effective yet basic. Melodic lines are played against a sustained background in this highly programmatic work."

Instrumentalist, October 1999.

Each work in the Improvisation Series comes with complete instructions that may be duplicated for the entire ensemble.

Tonal aleotoric improvisation is restricted to the Bb scale pitch set and superimposed on lush melodies to duplicate the random beauty of these magical creatures of the summer night. A wonderful work to get the ensemble to listen and blend, Fireflies is best performed in the dark with flashlights covered with green and yellow tissue paper. A real crowd pleaser! Length: 5:20. In a recent performance during summer band camp, the students got very involved with the flashlight portion of the work. Many students spent hours outside at night watching the fireflies and then taught me that the flashes range from less than a second to two or three seconds long. They taught me that some of the flashes are stationary but some swirl through the air in lovely arcs. After watching, they were able to give a very realistic depiction of a summer night filled with these magical creatures.

Gets your entire band jamming the Blues. The Blues Basics guide (included with the set) has all lessons needed to get your group cooking like a small combo. It is OK to photocopy the Basics guide for your students! This is a very popular work! Length: 3:10. Teaching suggestions included.

Part I of “Unknown Heroes of the Civil War” for the sesquicentennial anniversary. The work celebrates the life and devotion to country of Elizabeth Van Lew and her compatriots. Enduring Honor blends Episcopal hymnody and Civil War field calls; the entire war depicted in seven minutes. Part set includes a PowerPoint with historical photos and biographical information.

"The students really grew to enjoy playing Enduring Honor and the audience was really moved by the power of the antiphonal trumpet, drum and fife and of course the bass drums."
 - Marc Blanchette, Mt. St. Charles Academy, Woosocket, RI

For the sesquicentennial of the Great Conflict, this work commemorates Ely S. Parker - Seneca sachem (chief), engineer, adjutant for General Grant, and the first American Indian to head the Commission on Indian Affairs. At the surrender at Appomattox Court House, General Lee said to Mr. Parker, "At least there is one true American here." Parker replied, "General, we are all Americans."

The work fuses Seneca and Plains musical traditions with 'Lead, Kindly Light', the hymn sung at Parker's funeral. Part set includes a PowerPoint with historical photos and biographical information.

"This work perfectly honors Ely and is a brilliant blend of Native and Christian musical traditions."
 - E.B. Eiselein, Instructor of Native American Cultures, Flathead Valley Community College, Kalispell, Montana

The conclusion of the sesquicentennial trilogy, this work commemorates John Washington - an escaped slave who served in the Union Army and became one of the emergent middle class African Americans in Washington D.C. after the war. An active church member and teacher, this work fuses the hymn 'Cross Over' with the spiritual 'O, Happy Day'. Washington D.C. Emancipation Day (4/16/1862) and Emancipation Day (1/1/1863) punctuate the work in a celebration of freedom. Part set includes a PowerPoint with historical photos and biographical information.

"This is a wonderful work! The judges at the festival and audiences on our tour liked it very much. We are having a great time with it."
 - Allen Slater, Director of Bands, Flathead High School, Kalispell, Montana

"The Unknown Heroes trilogy is unique in the band repertoire. The musical material, voicings, and flow of the music make these works memorable concert works and very enjoyable to perform."
 - Russell McCutcheon, Director of Bands, Sunderman Conservatory of Gettysburg College

A grade three concerto for piano and band! Very playable by a young pianist and very popular with the audience. This work is a memorial for a pianist and based on their favorite work, the Fantasie-Impromptu by Frederick Chopin. The slow opening features a serene duet with the piano and flute. This is followed by a quick celebration using a West African-style "Hi-Life" beat. Electric bass is desired and six or more percussion can be used. A cadenza is included but Cadenza Guide is included that teaches the pianist how to compose their own! Duration: 9:00. Teaching suggestions included.
For Peace, Tolerance and Freedom

Salaam America

The moving national treasure America, The Beautiful is set with Arabic maqams (scales) and i'qa (rhythms) in commemoration of a visit to Tanzania in 2004 where Arabs, Africans, Asians - all joined the celebration of our July 4 celebration of freedom at the U. S. Embassy in Dar es Salaam. A slow introduction features the alto sax and/or trumpet in an improvisatory-like exposition and exploration of a scale with lowered second, minor and major 3, a doubly-raised fourth, a raised fifth, and a lowered seventh. Soon the oboe joins them and the band slowly joins them, rising to the melody with an eight-beat rhythmic mode. The work concludes with a raucous and ebullient 7/8. The rhythm section includes the tar, riqq (Western tambourine is fine), and dumbek. These instruments are inexpensive and easily available and introductory lessons can be found on the Internet.

Accompanying lessons (that can be duplicated for the class) teach the students about the basic structure of traditional Arabic scales and rhythms. This work satisfies MENC National Standards in theory, improvisation, and multicultural education. 8:30 minutes. Grade 3.

In July of 2004, I had the opportunity to celebrate Independence Day in eastern Africa, at the Embassy of the United States of America in Dar es Salaam ("Haven of Peace"), Tanzania. This celebration, held in the new compound built after the destruction of the old one by a terrorist bomb in 1998, united people of many different cultures and religions, all celebrating the ideas of freedom and democracy. On this day, people from Africa, the U. S., Asia, India, Pakistan, the Middle East - Christian, Hindu, Moslem and Traditional - ate, danced and celebrated the ideals that are the foundation of hopes and aspirations around the world Ð a life of freedom determined and directed by the people. It was one of my proudest days as a citizen of the United States of America.
"Voices of Water and Spirit has improvised sounds imitating frogs and toads and is coordinated with a prepared tape of waterlife sounds. The conductor's score includes rehearsal suggestions and detailed performance techniques for this work built on triadic intervals and a modal chant style. The expanded percussion parts include two mallet players, three drummers, and two on traps."
Recommended Work - Instrumentalist, November 2000.

Grade 3 for Band and Recorded Accompaniment. A song of healing and honor conceived at a sacred American Indian ceremony. Frog and toads calls weave with water sounds within a Plains-style honor song. This is a unique, provocative and powerful work has a deep impact on the audience. Duration: 8:20. Teaching suggestions included.

A tribute to the steam locomotive, the great "iron horses" of the past. The "Hi-Line" is the railroad running just below the Canada - USA border through the plains of Montana and North Dakota on the Minneapolis to Seattle line. This perpertual motion machine uses 5 or more percussion and really sounds like an steam locamotive! This work is grade 3 but the first trumpet has a brief high B natural (doubled in the flutes) at the apex of the work. Duration: 6:00.

"Commissioned by a band whose school was destroyed by fire, this unusual work portrays the gravity of the event, the ensuing turmoil, and the ultimate triumph over adversity. With basic wind combinations and a greatly expanded percussion section, this moody and highly descriptive piece employs extended and altered chords as well as dissonance. The adventuresome writing provides suitable material for study of a modern approach to composition and can be used to teach important tuning and balance skills." Instrumentalist, December 1998.

A triumphant fanfare fades to tall, ominous chords with fragments from "O Little Town of Bethlehem" muted in the background. Running sixteenth notes become more and more prominent (the growing flames of the fire), speeding up to a powerful and dramatic crash. Rustling papers in the brass and woodwind key clicks simulate the dying embers. Section three is a slow, somber Requiem, ending with a flute solo that begins to lift the darkness. Section four begins with the percussion section, building to a strong, powerful, joyous conclusion. Length: 14:00. Teaching suggestions included.

This heroic work has also been used in commemorations of September 11, 2001.

Facing the Rising Sun

Dedicated to those striving for Peace and Freedom

This lovely fantasy on the African-American spiritual Let Us Break Bread Together ranges from lush minimalism to traditional settings to jazz. The seven percussion parts include African rhythms, which can be played on traditional drums or Western substitutions. One African-American musician, who performed in the premiere, said this setting perfectly captured the essence of her favorite spritual. Duration: 7:00.

Kiai!

A "kiai" is the vocal exclamation used in many martial arts: it is conviction represented in sound. Kiai! combines in music the Japanese traditions of Gagaku (ancient classical music), Kotodama (vocal meditation similar to Tibetan chanting), Taiko drumming, and martial arts, particularly the non-violent art Aikido.

As I began sketches in the winter of 2011 the triple tragedy of a massive earthquake, tsunami and nuclear radiation contamination struck on March 11. In tribute to their courage in the face of these tragedies I dedicate this work to the inspirational people of Japan.

"It isn't possible to properly thank you for the gift of Kiai!"
 - Gary W. Hill, Evelyn Smith Professor of Music and Director of Ensemble Studies, Arizona State University.

Symphony No. 2

Three movements. 14 minutes. Grade 5. Movement III, Confluence, can be performed alone and is a rousing way to open or close a concert.

Symphony #2 is a melding, a blending, a celebration of my heritages. This diverse legacy comes in four forms: family (my ancestors); influences from the places I have lived; a love for the outdoors and its music (especially the calls of birds); and, finally, musical heritages from composers such as Bartok and a cornucopia of ethnic musics that I have played, listen to and studied. In essence, this work is a musical autobiography.

All these diverse ideas flow together in Symphony #2, uniting my roots and influences (both musical and genetic) with the flow of water, the flow of life itself. In the aural stamp of each voice of an ancestor, each culture that has touched me, each bird who sang (seemingly for me), each river and stream where I dipped my fly or feet or paddle, each redwood tree raising my eyes upward to the heavens: through all of this, my life has been sung.
Convivial Tides: A Festival For Wind Symphony is a three-movement work without pauses composed on commission for the Music Association of California Community Colleges. Free tertian relationships and polytonality based on thirds form the basis for all scale, polychordal and contrapuntal material with a polyrhythmic overlaying of textures using variations and derivatives of West African (Yoruba) traditions. All shapes and structures were inspired by the interplay of ocean cycles where wave after wave and wave upon wave are enclosed within the grand and powerful rise and fall of the tides.

The original work premiered in 1994. This revised version was released in 2001. Grade 6.

"I believe this is a significant addition to the wind band repertoireÉ" Sir David Whitwell
Symphony No. 3 is a melding of many forces, many traditions, many influences. The opening perfect fourth, the melodic fragments that comprise the material for the second movement, and the chromatic section - all have universal characteristics: majesty, a flowing grandeur, and an ever-hopeful arising and questing. The movement titles come from vernacular sayings: "a wellspring of knowledge," "fountain of knowledge," and "transcendent knowledge."

The perfect fourth is the harmonic framework for the work. Each movement rises in key a fourth above the previous: F - Bb - Eb - Ab (with the middle two in the second movement). There is extensive use of Asian percussion instruments and their characteristic musical and rhythmic patterns. The structure of many traditional Asian musics, which begin slowly and coalesce and condense, often over many minutes, is clearly heard in the second movement.

The final movement is the raucous culmination of modern life with a blend of many cultures, many influences, some ancient, some modern: diversity adding to the tableau of everyday existence. An African percussion ensemble joins the ensemble with a rhythm (Kuku or Koukou) used in many West African countries in ceremonies marking important events. Old One-Hundred is a main theme. Electric guitar, electric bass, Asian percussion, and African drums all combine to celebrate the traditions and global intertwining of modern life.

Movement III, Transcendence, will soon be released separately for purchase.

Chickadee Symphony is a unique addition to the Symphonic Band/Wind Ensemble repertoire. Black-capped chickadees have an expansive and sophisticated language with ten different vocalizations. Some of these are comprised of up to sixty different syllables! The Symphony uses the primary vocalizations as harmonic and melodic material in musical settings true to the behavioral context of the vocalizations. A five-minute film is included in the rental package to play for the audience before the performance. More detailed information can be found in the downloadable Score excerpt.

"What a fantastic piece of music the Chickadee Symphony is. It was really neat to watch you interacting with the music students!"
  - Erick Greene, Division of Biological Sciences and The Wildlife Biology Program, The University of Montana

In four movements.

Chickadee Dee Dance turns the eponymous “chickadee” into a jazz riff, punctuated with the “gargle” and “fee-bee” vocalizations. Big-band jazz predominates in the first half and a raucous, driving rock conclusion makes this an extremely enjoyable and compelling work.

"The UI Wind Ensemble was excited about The Chickadee Symphony and your comments and suggestions were just what we needed to take the performance to a higher level. Congratulations on a wonderful piece."
